Participants will learn the foundations of a solid approach to pastel portraiture. Topics include: selecting and preparing the proper surface for pastels, application of the medium, working with pastels (layering and making corrections), and finally learning how to preserve the finished piece and framing. Short demos will reinforce concepts discussed in class.

About the Instructor

Sam Goodsell has devoted his life to the pastels, studying with Harvey Dinnerstein. His works have garnered awards including the Pastel Society of America’s Herman Margulies Award for Excellence and “Best in Show” at the Pastel Journal’s 5th Annual Pastel 100 Competition. He has appeared in The Artist’s Magazine, American Artist Magazine, and The Pastel Journal. Three works have been acquired by the USC Fisher Museum of Art in Los Angeles. He has taught for the Pastel Society of America and the Art League of Long Island and provided live demonstrations for the Connecticut Pastel Society, Pastel Society of New Jersey, and the Art Guild of Manhasset.
