Bil Donovan

Bil Donovan is one of today’s most accomplished and revered fashion illustrators, deemed so by Christian Dior, who appointed him their first Artist-in-Residence in 2009, a role he continues to serve in as illustrator for the brand. Mr. Donovan travels the country for Dior Beauty making personal appearances at Saks and Neiman Marcus creating fashion portraits of Dior clientele.

As an artist, author, educator and spokesperson he is a true champion of the art form. With a client list that includes Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, St. Regis, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks, and The New York Times, Donovan utilizes an innate sense of selectivity in his work to communicate the essence of glamour, luxury and style.

Mr. Donovan is also the author of Advanced Fashion Drawing / Lifestyle Illustration and has illustrated a number of books including The Dress Doctor, from the original by costume designer Edith Head and Birds of a Feather Shop Together, a collection of fashion fables, both for Harper Collins and more recently, The Pursuit of Style for the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Mr. Donovan also has partnered with Silk Pro Mills in Como Italia to create a line of limed edition scarves in conjunction with his prints through bildonovanlimited.com.

He continues to promote the work in his role as chairman of the Frances Neady Collection of Fashion Illustration at FIT and an executive board member of the Society of Illustrators. Most recently Mr. Donovan was commissioned by Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to illustrate a series of fashion illustrations of iconic designs for a limited edition book presented to the curator Harold Koda, for inclusion in the permanent collection of the Costume Institutes Library and visible in the recent exhibit, Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion (2017). His large painting of a Dior timeline in the Christian Dior Suite of the St. Regis has become iconic and his work is also present in the Presidential suite as well as the lobby of the New York hotel.

Mr. Donovan and his unique style of work have been profiled in various publications, most recently in Tony Glenville’s Icons of Fashion Illustration and Taschen’s Fashion Illustration Now. Donovan is the 2015 recipient of the Stevan Dohanos Award for Excellence in Illustration from the Society of Illustrators.
