A fundamental aspect of training in the classical tradition of oil painting is the study of values. With an accurate drawing and good value relationships, a painting is on its path to success. This class will focus on painting the portrait using a monochromatic palette: Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black and Titanium White. Diana will teach the general structure of the head and will point out the larger planes and shapes in relationship to the light source. Students will learn how to control their values and create the illusion of form and naturalism. Short demos and individual critiques will be held during each class. Students will complete their own grisaille painting through observation of a life model. These monochromatic paintings, while beautiful and dynamic on their own, are also a useful tool when used as an underpainting for a full color palette.
