This half lecture and studio course focuses on the history and techniques of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. More commonly known as simply, Caravaggio. Class objectives consist of learning and applying Italian baroque era painting techniques used by this master. For the lecture part of the course, we will chronologically explore the life and painting progress of Caravaggio. Accompanying each week’s lecture, we will integrate exercises – copying Caravaggio’s materials and techniques. In tandem to lecture, composition, perspective, proportion, focal point, value pattern and the use of light and shadow are developed throughout the course. Students will come out of the course with the understanding of the impact Caravaggio’s style has on the art world.
