Most artists find it necessary to work from photos at some point as a part of portrait painting. In this workshop we explore how to create captivating portraits using photo reference as our subject. We will discuss what constitutes good photo reference, how to use the reference without merely copying and how to keep our paintings fresh and lively. Using the photo as a launching point, we will examine decisions about composition, focal points and paint application. Students are encouraged to bring in their own photos. Additionally, the instructor will provide photo reference options and demonstrations of painting from photos.
