Students will learn to use the Indo-Persian miniature painting approach in an
intensive, five day workshop focusing on the figure in miniature painting.
Participants will study the stylization and composition of the body in the
tradition of miniature painting. The primary processes explored in this course
will be painting with tea and water based paints. In addition, students will learn
how to prepare painting surfaces, mix traditional miniature paints using gum
Arabic and apply gold leaf. Workshop participants will be required to bring in a 5 x 7 inch full-length photograph of themselves in profile.

About the Instructor

Hiba Schahbaz is a Brooklyn-based artist who works in the centuries-old art form of miniature painting. She trained in miniature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan and received an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute. In addition to exhibiting her work internationally, Schahbaz has curated exhibitions of miniature paintings in Pakistan and India. She was an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center and The Wassaic Project and has taught miniature painting as part of the Alfred Z. Solomon Residency at the Tang Museum.
