Schedule of Residency

The program is open year round. The Vytlacil campus follows the holiday and closing schedule of the Art Students League of New York.

Foreign Applicants
If required, a visitorâs visa must be secured by the artist after acceptance. Check with the U.S. State Department Visa Guidelines for instructions. Artists should obtain their visa to coincide with their selected stay.

Credit Conversion
Many accredited art schools, colleges and universities grant academic credit for one-time educational experiences such as lectures and critiques, workshops, study abroad programs and internships. If you are enrolled in an accredited art institution of higher learning and wish to receive credit for your experience at the Art Students League of New York, please speak to your advisor or department chair to explore the best way to obtain credit for off-campus experiences at non-accredited institutions.

For those currently enrolled at an accredited art institution, it may be necessary for you, your advisor or the department chair to seek approval for the course and obtain credit. The following information will help you make your case:
  • Completion of the Residency program will be recognized by a certificate issued to the student/apprentice by the Art Students League of New York. The certificate will not carry any academic credit, but credit may be granted by established formulas for computing and converting contact hours into college credit.
  • For studio classes in most accredited institutions, the conversion rate is 28 contact hours per credit; 28 homework hours per credit (total production for one credit is 56 hours).
  • The Art Students League of New York can provide a performance report to your college or university detailing contact hours and activities appropriate to academic credit production in the Residency program.
  • Most schools allow credit for non-accredited experiences such as the residency program at The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and many foreign study venues. ãField Studyä and ãIndependent Studyä course numbers may require approval by Academic Policies committees at the department or college level.
Important: Schools may waive full tuition for credit-worthy courses and experiences when they are not providing the course or experience themselves. In such cases, students may only be required to pay a much lower sum as a ãcredit recording fee.ä Not all academic advisors are familiar with this practice. Please bring it to the attention of your advisor if you are considering converting the Residency program into college credit.

Students not currently enrolled in an accredited institution will be provided with documentation of their activity in the Apprenticeship program for possible college credit or transfer credit, but the Art Students League of New York can not and will not guarantee that such documentation will be accepted by all accredited institutions.
