The Art Students League of New York is modeled after the French (atelier) system of instruction. League instructors are present in the studio twice a week or as otherwise specified in the schedule of classes. When the instructor is not present, the class is under the charge of a monitor. The monitor’s duty is to act as general source of information for the new student.
REGISTRATION & PAYMENTS
The League accepts most forms of payment, including cash, check, travelers’ checks, and major credit cards. Registration is per calendar month. In addition to tuition fees, students must pay a yearly registration fee of $15, which is non-refundable and non-transferable. Some classes also require a small materials fee, due at the time of registration. Registration is non-transferable.
• New students may start class at any time as long as the class is not closed. First-time tuition is prorated, depending on what time of month the student registers.
• Enrolled students: registration at the League is on a month-by-month basis, and students may register and pay for the class starting two weeks prior to the new month. Tuition is due no later than the first day of each month. Students who were registered for a class the previous month are required to pay a full month’s tuition when re-registering for that same class.
• Lockers are available to registered students for a monthly fee of $8 plus a one-time key deposit of $8. A locker that is in arrears for more than two months will be emptied. Because storage space is very limited, the League is unable to store the contents of emptied lockers. Once a locker is emptied, the contents will be discardedthe League is not responsible for any materials removed from a locker in arrears. Students must be enrolled in a class in order to maintain a locker. The key deposit is refundable upon the return and proper processing of the key in the office. Students are liable for their locker rent until the locker key has been returned. The replacement fee for a lost key is $8. League members may rent lockers in the basement without being enrolled in a class.
• Waiting lists: If a student fails to register for their class by the first day of the month, they will be automatically withdrawn from that class. If there is a waiting list for the class, the withdrawn student’s place in the class will be offered to the first person on the waiting list, then the second, and so forth, until the class is filled. Waiting lists are maintained for filled classes for one session only, regular (fall/spring) or summer. New lists are created at the start of registration for each new session.
• Refunds: Tuition refunds are calculated as of the date of notification. Notification of withdrawal can be made in person, by phone 845-359-1263, or via e-mail: info@aslv.org. 75% of the remaining calculated balance will be refunded by issuing credit to the student’s account, or if requested, a check can be issued and mailed to the student (allow three weeks for processing). When withdrawing, indicated to the clerk your preference of credit or check. Absences of any kind from a class for which a student is registered do not qualify for a refund or credit. Student may not make up missed classes.

MEMBERSHIP
All students at the Art Students League who have been registered for three full months in a class meeting five days a week, or the equivalent in part-time study, or at least one full year of study in the Saturday classes, are eligible to become Members of the Art Students League of New York. The same conditions for joining the League apply retroactively to those who have been students at the League but are no longer currently registered.
In the early days of the League, the applicant for Membership had first to present letters of recommendation, as well as a portfolio of work to a committee of League Members. Today, however, there is no requirement that an applicant prove artistic proficiency or meet with a committee. After entering his or her name in the book for prospective members in the League office, the candidate must have one Member sign the book for him or her as a proposer of Membership, and two Members sign it as sponsors. If elected at the next semi-annual Membership Meeting, the candidate must then sign the League's Constitution and pay the annual dues of $35 within thirty days from the date of his election. After ten years of paying dues, the League Member becomes a Life Member. Life Members do not pay dues and retain all the privileges of membership.
All Members have the right to vote and voice opinions at the Members' Meetings, and also the right to elect, as well as to be elected to, the Board of Control. The Late-afternoon Life Sketch Classes (5:00 to 6:30 pm, Monday through Friday) are free to League Members. On Fridays, Members, as well as other interested artists, can participate in the League's Special Friday Class program, where they may buy a ticket to attend any class without an instructor just for the day. For more information on this program, please see the schedule. On Saturdays during the regular winter session there are morning and afternoon Life Classes open to Members. The fee for these classes is $6 for each half day. All League Members receive Linea, The Journal of The Art Students League of New York, which will appear several times a year and contains news of League events and activities, Instructors, Members, and former students. All League Members receive written notification of League activities, including lectures and meetings.
PUBLICATION
Linea: The Journal of the Art Students League of New York is published three times a year. In addition to news of its instructors, members, students and a calender of events, the journal includes exhibition reviews and essays written by artists. Linea is the official publication of the Art Students League and is circulated to League members, art schools, colleges, museums, libraries and newspapers throughout North and South America.
ORGANIZATION
The Art Students League of New York has always been operated by its Members through an annually elected Board of Control. The Board consists of twelve officers, of which one-third must be students enrolled in the school.
At the Annual Meeting, the League Members elect a President, a Men's Vice-President (nominated by the men), a Women's Vice-President (nominated by the women), and three other officers. Of the six officers thus chosen, at least three, not including the President, must be selected from the retiring Board of Control. The six officers, elected at this Annual Meeting, then meet within ten days and proceed to elect six other officers, and appoint a Treasurer, a Corresponding Secretary and a Recording Secretary.
Officers of the Board of Control shall receive no remuneration from the Art Students League of New York for their services, and they are not eligible for any salaried office in the League. The Board of Control endeavors to interpret and carry out the wishes of the students and members in the working details of the school. It determines financial and administrative policies. These policies are executed by the Executive Director, who works with the Board in an advisory capacity, and is in charge of the administration of the school.
The Board meets on a regular basis. In order to receive prompt attention, requests, suggestions or student problems must be submitted in writing to the League office in time for delegation to the proper committees of the Board before each meeting.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS
Financial assistance is available to all students in full-time and part-time classes.

KILN

Students who attended the League in 1990 or after will be charged $15 per transcript. Transcript requests are processed within 10 business days.
THE CONCOURS
The Concours is a series of exhibitions consisting of works by League students. Each class holds an exhibition lasting a week. The cycle of exhibitions begins in January and continues through May, with usually three to four classes sharing the gallery at the same time.
The Concours takes its name from exhibitions and contests of various kinds held in French ateliers (for example, the Ecole des BeauxArts and the Academic Julian) during the nineteenth century, with the students competing for prizes, medals, or even for working spots in the studio. From its inception, the League has held concours similar to these. Early on, the instructors first picked their best students, and then all the works were exhibited together. There was a purchase prize of $105 called The Instructors' Prize, which was awarded to the student voted the best by a jury of League instructors. Eugene Speicher won this prize in 1908 for his portrait of fellow student Georgia O'Keeff e, and a still-life by O'Keeffe was also acquired for the League's collection.
A judge assigns a seal or "red dot" to the work deemed best. All of the red dot works are exhibited at the end of the year. A committee composed of members of the Board of Control may select works from this exhibit to be purchased for the League's Permanent Collection.
PRESCRIBED COURSES OF STUDY
The Art Students League of New York makes available Prescribed Courses of Study leading to a Certificate of Completion. The courses offered are in Fine Arts Painting, Fine Arts Sculpture and Fine Arts Printmaking. These Prescribed Courses leading to a Certificate of Completion will consist of a four-year program of classes with the student attending on a full-time basis, which is a minimum of 25 hours of studio work per week. Supplementary programs for the Prescribed Courses in each of the above categories are available on application to the office of the Art Students League.
The Prescribed Courses are structured to enable the student to make a normal progression in a planned sequence of classes. Students taking the Prescribed Courses will be required to take the classes in the order specified in the program. An interview is required before registering for a program of Prescribed Courses.
