Vytlacil Residency Program

Set just outside the Lower Hudson River Vallery hamlet of Sparkill, New York, half an hour from New York City, the 15 wooded acres and former home and studio of Vaclav Vytlacil offer artists time and space to focus on current work or investigate new ideas and techniques. Apply now.

Residents are provided with private rooms and studio space. They may also take part in up to 80 hours per month of all ongoing studio art classes in painting and drawing, mixed media, clay, stone, wood, metal sculpture and forging.

This small community of fellow artists working in the studio-based atelier tradition has grown out of the long-held principles on which the Art Students League of New York was founded in 1876. From the first residents accepted in mid-2007, the program has already hosted dozens of artists ranging in age from 23 to 80, from eight countries and throughout the United States.

Our current facilities include the Trudy & Henry Gillette north-lit painting studio, a newly built sculpture studio equipped for all media, a bronze foundry, forging and welding facilities and a large walk-in kiln.

The first floor of Vytlacil's Late Victorian farmhouse contains the office, art supply store, an extensive library, iMac computer with Photoshop, Wi-Fi and the resident studio spaces. Residents are accommodated in the three private bedrooms and the shared bath and kitchen on the second floor.  New Independent Living and Studio Quarters to house additional residents will be opened later this year. Lunch is provided daily. The Vyt Van connects residents to local shopping and to New York's vital arts institutions and community.

Residency fees are $2,500 U.S. per month. Shorter or longer residencies may be arranged. Travel is the responsibility of the artist.

A growing fellowship program helps support many residents. Scholarship opportunities and deadlines will be announced on this Web site.
