Painting and Drawing from Life

In Terence Coyleâs class, the student discovers the means by which one may
creatively combine drawing, painting, anatomy, color and composition with individual
expression and personal freedom. Mr. Coyle reminds the students that greater knowledge,
not only in the use of materials and techniques of painting and drawing, but also in
awareness of the dynamic use of the elements and principles of design, will put more
vitality and life into one's work.
Mr. Coyle studied at Columbia University and Hunter College. At the Art
Students League he studied the figure and artistic anatomy with Robert Beverly Hale for many
years and became his substitute lecturer and co-author. Among Mr. Coyleâs influential
painting teachers were Robert Philipp, Henry Hensche and Ed Whitney. Mr. Coyle has
taught at the Art Students League since 1974. He has also taught at New York University,
at the National Academy of Design and at the Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona. He is
co-author, with Robert Beverly Hale, of Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters and
Albinus on Anatomy. In 1985, the artist compiled and edited Haleâs lectures in Master
Class in Figure Drawing, Watson-Guptill Publications.
Mr. Coyle's oil landscape, Monument Mountain, was chosen for the Berkshires
Museumâs Exhibition The Power of Place in 2005. Also in 2005, the solo show Terence
Coyle: A Retrospective at 80 was held at the National Arts Club Grand Galleries in New
York City with selected works spanning from 1955 to 2005. A book, Terence Coyle: A
Retrospective at 80, was published by Jo-An Pictures, New York City. One of Coyleâs
portraits was acquired from the exhibition by the Butler Museum of American Art for
their permanent collection.
Mr. Coyle's paintings are represented in galleries throughout the country, and he
is listed in Whoâs Who In American Art. His paintings are included in the collections of
many museums, among them: the Museum of the City of New York, the New York
Museum in Albany, the National Academy of Design, Fordham University, the Museum
of Performing Arts and the Billy Rose Theatre Collection.
