Painting from Life, Portraiture

Sharon Sprung teaches contemporary realism, figure painting in oil from the
model, still life and landscape. There is an emphasis on drawing skill and a basic
understanding of anatomy, movement, psychological force, light and shape, rich paint,
color and the use of correct value relationships in creating an expressive work that has
strength and presence. There is a special focus on personal critique for the individual
student. Lectures and demonstrations will stress the specific fundamentals of paintings,
illustrated by works of significant artists, both past and present.
Ms. Sprung attended Cornell University and studied at the Art Students League
and the National Academy of Design. Her most recent exhibitions in group shows are:
Juxtaposition at Gallery Henoch; Why The Nude? at the Art Students League; Portrait of
ÜA¹, selected by the Outwin Boochever Portrait Commission 2006 at the National
Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and a three-person show, also at Henoch, that
was part of the Gallery Salute to the 130th anniversary of the Art Students League.
She has had numerous solo exhibitions at Gallery Henoch and the Sherry French
Gallery, the latest in 2002 at Henoch, where she is represented. She has also had many
solo exhibitions at the Asher Gallery, Boca Raton, Florida; the Sundance Gallery,
Bridgehampton, New York and the Harbor Gallery, Cold Spring Harbor, New York. Her
work has been included in exhibitions at Art Miami, International Art Exposition, the
Chicago International Art Exposition, the Fitchburg Art Museum, the Anchorage Art
Museum, the Rockwell College Art Gallery and the Knoxville Museum of Art. She is
also represented by Portraits, Inc. in New York City.
Ms. Sprungäs work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections,
including AT&T, Bell Labs, Chase Manhattan Bank, Packer Collegiate Institute,
