Painting from Life

Robert Neffsonâs class is based on direct observation of the model with emphasis on developing a personal technique and style.Through analysis of different aspects of realism, aesthetic strategies are considered.There are discussions of line, form, color, paint application, texture, perspective, composition and art history.
Mr. Neffsonâs grants include a Fulbright Fellowship to Rome, ending with an
exhibition at the American Embassyâs Bibliotheca Americana.The following year he was
appointed Artist-In-Residence at the Roswell Museum, New Mexico. He has been
awarded a Foundation Grant from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts, a Visual Artists
Grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, two Faculty Research Grants from the
Pennsylvania State University and a Greenshield Memorial Foundation Grant.
Mr. Neffson studied at the Art Students League with Lennart Anderson. He
graduated cum laude from Boston University with an M.F.A. degree.
His work focuses on figure painting, still life and street scenes of Manhattan, and
exhibits a love for classical order, structure and realism.
Mr. Neffson has had several one-man exhibitions in New York City. His work has
been included in major group shows at the Butler Institute of American Art; the Library
of Congress; the South Bend Museum of Art; the Fitchburg Museum; the Museum of Art,
Pennsylvania State University; OK Harris Gallery and Michael Ingbar Gallery, New York City; the Squibb
Gallery, Princeton, New Jersey; Long Island University Gallery and others. Recently, he
had one-man exhibitions at Hammer Galleries, New York City in the fall 2004 and fall
2005. His work was reviewed in the November 2006 issue of Artnews. Mr. Neffson was
commissioned to do a painting of the newly finished 7 World Trade Center that was
presented to Larry A. Silverstein at a ceremony attended by Governor George E. Pataki
and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.
He was Assistant Professor of Art at Pennsylvania State University and taught at
Arizona State University, Fisher Junior College, the DeCordova Museum, Boston
University and Pratt Institute.
Mr. Neffson is represented by Hammer Galleries in New York City and Plus One Gallery in London, U.K.
