Philip Lawrence Sherrod
Painting from Life

In 1977, Philip Sherrod founded "The Street Painters." They exhibited at the League in 1980, 1983, 1990, 2001 and more than eighty other places around the country.

Raphael Soyer said, "These "Street Painters" absorb life richly, immediately, and convey impressions in a frenzy. They are individuals that paint what they see through themselves, intensely, searchingly, feelingly."

Philip Sherrod has degrees in both zoology and painting from Oklahoma State University. He also studied at the Art Students League with Sidney E. Dickinson, Ivan Olinsky and Edwin Dickinson. Among his awards and grants are three Childe Hassam Purchase Awards from the American Academy of Arts & Letters, 1967, 1969, and 1974; Creative Artists Public Service Grant (CAPS), 1980; grants from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation 1981, 1988, 1996 and 2006; a grant from the NEA, 1982; a Rome Prize Fellowship from the American Academy in Rome, 1985-86; and a Pollock-Krasner Grant, 1989.
