Nelson Shanks served as professor at the University of the Arts and George Washington University; conducted seminars at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the New York Academy of Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Arcadia University awarded him a Ph.D. in Fine Arts. He is one of the most sought after teachers in the world and founder of the post-graduate school, Studio Incamminati.

Mr. Shanks studied throughout Europe, including in Florence at Accademia di Belle Arti and with Pietro Annigoni. Additional studies were at the University of Kansas, the Kansas City Art Institute (with Wilbur Niewald), the Art Students League (with Ivan Olinsky, Robert Brackman, and Edwin Dickinson), and privately with John Koch and Henry Hensche.

His work has been exhibited at the National Academy of Design; Hirschl and Adler Galleries; Coe Kerr, FAR Galleries; Dayton Art Institute; Butler Institute of Art; Art Institute of Chicago; the New Jersey State Museum; the National Gallery of Art; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; Oklahoma University; University of Pennsylvania;Temple University; Jefferson University; John Hopkins University; College of William and Mary; Allentown Art Museum; the Palmer Museum of Art; George Washington University; Royal Palace, Stockholm; and Kensington Palace, London. A one-man exhibition was held at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as Hirschl and Adler Galleries in 1996, where his portrait of HRH the Princess of Wales was the featured painting in the Hirschl and Adler exhibition, Yanks Paint Brits. In June 2006, he received the prestigious Philadelphia Governorâs Award for Excellence in the Arts. In October 2006, the Union League of Philadelphia held an exhibition of his work entitled Mastery and Meaning. One-man exhibitions for 2008 have been requested by the Russian Academy, Moscow, and the Russian State Museum, St. Petersburg.
