Drawing, Painting, Egg Tempra and Classical Mediums and Techniques
In stating her philosophy as an artist, Barbara Adrian says, "The magic of life, both real and phantasmagorical, caught in a moment of time, is eternal.ä She believes one must learn to "see.ä In her teachings she stresses the importance of good drawing and the techniques of the Old Masters. These are the bases for all great art÷both classical as well as modern.
Ms. Adrian studied with Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League from 1947 to 1954 and was his assistant from 1951 to 1954.
She has exhibited widely: at the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Gallery of
Modern Art, New York City; the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the National Academy of Design; the Century Association; and Babcock Gallery, all in New York City. Ms. Adrian has had several solo shows, including exhibitions at the Banfer Gallery and the Century Association in New York City. She was awarded the Benjamin Altman Figure Prize at the National Academy of Design. In 1995, she received the Certificate of Merit from the National Academy of Design and was elected National Academician. She was awarded the Richard H. Recchia Memorial Prize from the National Academy of Design in 2001.
Her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Century Association; the National
Academy of Design; City Hall, San Juan, Puerto Rico; the Southern Alleghenies Museum of
Art, Loretto, Pennsylvania; the Butler Institute of American Art, the Arkansas Art Center Little Rock, Arkansas, and many public and private collections.
Ms. Adrian was Artistic Director for Avon, Sakâs Fifth Avenue, Doyal, Dain and Bernback, R.H. Macyâs and McCalls Design magazine, all in New York City.
An illustrated article about her, "Oil Highlights on Figure Painting, 1987ö1995,ä appeared in the magazine American Artist. She is in Whoâs Who in American Art, Art as Image and Idea and many other publications.
