Life Drawing, Practical Anatomy, Finding Oneās Art Vision

Anthony Palumbo has taught painting and drawing for many years. In figure
drawing he offers a unique program through simplified anatomy symbols, taking the
mystery out of the cumbersome study of traditional anatomy thus clearing the studentās
mind to discover their own personal art ability. The needs of all students are satisfied no
matter the level of experience.
Experimentation is encouraged and lecture demonstrations are held when needed.
Sketching and drawing of the figure are central to the purpose of the class. Their use in
picture making and composition is vigorously stressed.
Mr. Palumbo believes all facets of drawing to be a prelude to discovering oneās
own personal statement in art, whether it be graphics, sculpture or painting that is the
final discipline. His goal is to prepare his students with enough drawing information and
creative encouragement so that they have at their fingertips what they need to develop the
depth of their own personal art voice.
Born in Italy, his early contact with church art, colorful processions, traveling
puppet shows, garish hawkers of the latest novellas with their grotesque, primitive
illustrations left lasting impressions which influence his art.
During the WPA years, he was an apprentice to muralists commissioned to create
public art expressing the social and economic struggles of the era. Mr. Palumbo worked
as a syndicated cartoonist, later as an illustrator and in early television assisted in art
instruction programs.
Mr. Palumbo studied with Reginald Marsh, Hans Hofmann and Rico LeBrun and
others who reinforced his choice to devote his lifeās work to the fine arts. He studied at
the Art Students League, the New School and the Instituto Allende in Mexico. Mr.
Palumbo has exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Montclair and Jersey
City museums, New York galleries, and is represented in numerous private collections.
He was a Visiting Instructor in the Theatre Design Department of Yale School of Drama
for several years. In 2002, Mr. Palumbo was honored with a retrospective exhibition at
the Art Students League of New York.
