2011 National Medals of Arts and Humanities Ceremony
President Obama awards Will Barnet the National Medal of Art for his work in abstraction, expressionism, and cubism.
A prolific printmaker and painter, Mr. Barnet taught at the League for over 40 years.

M2M
The Art Students League and the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation unveiled a total of eight sculptures in Riverside Park South in Manhattan (June 24) and Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx (June 28) as part of the Model to Monument program (M2M), a five-year partnership between the League and the Parks Department.
M2M advisor Greg Wyatt led the team of seven sculptors: Elizabeth Allison, John Balsamo, Allston Chapman, Akihiro Ito, Selva Sanjines, Noa Shay, and Matthew White. Read the press release here. Learn more about the artists and see photos on the M2M web page.

Art for Japan Raises $17,500!
The Art for Japan fundraiser, organized by Art Students Leaguers Yuka Imata, John Baber and Amy DiGi, raised $17,500 in art sales in just two hours on April 7 at Studio 57 Fine Arts.
Thanks to Studio 57 Fine Arts and League Board of Control President Sal Barbieri for their generosity, to all the artists who donated their work, and to all the buyers. Congrats Yuka, John and Amy!

In April, the program earned a New York Emmy for Producer Bob Morris and Editorial Director Joan Hershey.

A new interior design online magazine, The Roger, spoke with the League's Director of the Exhibition Outreach Program, Leah McCloskey in this article.
In October 2011, League instructor Ronnie Landfield's paintings caught the eye of well-known art critic David Cohen, who questioned the artist's use of color fields in a recent review. At about the same time, Landfield was busy writing an essay on his color fields, "The Three Bands." When Cohen saw the essay, he welcomed the dialogue, and Landfield's essay was published in reply. Cohen isn't the only one talking about Landfield's bands of color: read critic James Panero's article here.
League student Kenneth Wong was noted as one of "25 Artists to Watch" for his watercolors in Artist Daily. Read the article and then check out more of Kenneth's watercolors.

In October 2001, League instructor Jack Faragasso was featured in the very first issue of Illustration magazine. Only 5,000 copies were printed—but in October 2008, Illustration magazine issued its third printing of the first edition. The 13-page article discusses Mr. Faragasso's experience at the League under instructor Frank Reilly, his prolific career designing movie posters and book covers (including the cover of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds), and his current paintings. Read "The Art of Jack Faragasso" here.
The artistic vision of former League student Romare Bearden (1911-88) is sythesized via a collection of fourteen essays in the book Romare Bearden, American Modernist. Bearden, who was a student of League instructor George Grosz, is best known for his politically and socially charged collages. The exhibit, 'Romare Bearden Collage: A Centennial Celebration,' runs through May 21 at the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, 24 West 57th Street.
The Visual ARTBEAT Magazine prints League Instructor Pat Lipsky's talk, "What Tony, Lee, and Clem Told Me," originally delivered at The Pollock-Krasner House in 1995.
ARTnews (May 2011) reviews the recent work of League instructor Larry Poons.

League instructor Ellen Eagle talks about her approach to portraiture in an eight-page article in the April 2011 issue of The Artists Magazine. Eight of Ms. Eagle's works are featured.

Benat Iglesias Lopez and Executive Director Ira Goldberg in American Artist: This past January, League student and 2008 Edward G. McDowell Travel grant winner Benat Iglesias Lopez was featured in American Artist as one of "11 Groundbreaking Artists to Watch in the New Year." Benat was recognized for his sensitivity in capturing the "lone figure" in his drawings and paintings.

Nelson Shanks Exhibiting in Russia. This summer, former longtime League instructor Nelson Shanks will be showing 50 works in exhibitions at the State Museum in St. Petersburg (opening on June 2) and at the Royal Academy of Arts in Moscow (opening on August 4.) Mr. Shanks is one of only two living American painters to have been invited to exhibit at either of these venues. A right, Mr. Shank’s The Cultist from the exhibition. An article on Mr. Shanks will appear in the Fall edition of LINEA.
