2011 National Medals of Arts and Humanities Ceremony

President Obama awards Will Barnet the National Medal of Art for his work in abstraction, expressionism, and cubism. A prolific printmaker and painter, Mr. Barnet taught at the League for over 40 years.

League student Benat Iglesias Lopez was featured in American Artist as a "Groundbreaking Artist to Watch in the New Year."
       

 

The artistic vision of former League student Romare Bearden (1911-88) is sythesized via a collection of fourteen essays in the book Romare Bearden, American Modernist.  Bearden, who was a student of League instructor George Grosz, is best known for his politically and socially charged collages.  The exhibit, 'Romare Bearden Collage: A Centennial Celebration,' runs through May 21 at the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, 24 West 57th Street.
